The Proper Way to Jump Start a Car

Learning how to properly jump start a car isn’t difficult, but it requires a little patience and assistance. Calling a jump start car service is a great backup plan, but if you have a set of cables in your emergency kit, you can save yourself some time and money by performing the steps yourself. Here are the basic steps of how to jump start a car.

  1. Find a good Samaritan nearby with a working vehicle and grab your jumper cables.
  2. Park both vehicles with the batteries facing each other. In most cases, this will mean both hoods will face each other. However, some foreign cars have the batteries in the trunk.
  3. Turn off both cars and set the parking brakes for safety.
  4. Look for the batteries in both cars and remove the plastic hoods if present.
  5. Identify the positive and negative battery terminals. Make sure they are clear of corrosion and dirt.
  6. Separate the red and black ends of your jumper cables. From now on, it’s important that the two ends don’t touch, or you could cause sparks.
  7. Connect the red clamp to the positive post on the dead battery.
  8. Connect the other red clamp to the positive post on the working battery.
  9. Connect the black clamp to the negative post on the working battery.
  10. Connect the other black clamp on a grounded, unpainted surface on your car’s frame.
  11. With the cables secure, ask the good Samaritan to start the car with the working battery.
  12. Wait a few minutes before trying to start your engine. It takes time to jump start a car battery.
  13. Once your car is working, remove the jumper cables in the reverse order described above.
  14. Keep your engine running for at least 10 minutes to build up the charge. Otherwise, you might need to jump start the car battery all over again—or you might find that your car won’t jump start again.
  15. Schedule a service for a battery check or replacement.

You can always call a jump start car service or tow service in Port Washington. Here are some other issues you might encounter when trying to start your car.

  1. Does your car only make clicking noises when you try to start it? You might have a faulty starter rather than a faulty battery.
